ADULT SAILING CLASSES
Lessons with a certified instructor.
Classes are from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
March 19 & 20, 26 & 27
Class: $250
Students should wear water shoes, bring a hat, hand towel and bottled water.
General Description: A four-day, 3-hour sailing course to introduce the basics of sailing a boat up to about 20 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions on Charlotte Harbor and/or the beginning course of several more advanced courses available in 3-hour units.
All students must be able to swim with a life jacket and be sufficiently agile to move from one side of the boat to the other under sail. The instructor is always the captain and is the sole authority on sailing conditions and weather and may cut a lesson short for any number of safety concerns.
You will have an opportunity to learn:
I. Sailing Knowledge
a. Identify essential parts of a sailboat and their functions.
b. Rig and un-rig a 15-foot sloop
c. Define points of sail and nautical terms used on a sailboat.
d. Review Inland Navigation Rules for prevention of collision at sea in various situations and identify the boats that are the “stand-on” and “give-way” boats.
e. Learn what to do when sailing near commercial boats and how to maintain a look-out.
II. Sailing Skills
a. Understand and use a personal flotation device and clothing for various conditions.
b. Hoist the sails, set luff tensions, coil and hang halyards, and other lines.
c. Learn how to take the helm and crew on a sailboat.
d. Use proper commands and responses while sailing in various wind directions.
e. Sail a windward/leeward course with tacks and jibes, steer by the lee without jibing.
f. Lower, fold, and stow sails properly.
g. Review actions to be taken when a person falls overboard and recovery.
h. Anchor a sailboat to ensure limited movement.
i. Review 6 basic knots and why we use them.
